![]() ![]() But you know - well ok, you see where we are today… (smiles) One thing I remember back from when I was in my education, we were working on Macintosh computers, and we had two hours weekly working on Macintosh computers and it was obvious that the teacher he didn’t believe in it – it was something that was useless. I’d have to say it’s not something I’m using a lot. So with my background that’s of course a benefit. So of course, we’re very much involved in designs, or how the packaging’s going to end up. Jens: Well it’s definitely something that has meant that when we were getting new packaging, I’m the first person who points out if there’s something that’s not done right. TBB: How do you think that that background in lithography and design has helped you over the last 20 years? So that’s why I felt really, really good coming to LEGO where there’s more opportunity to use my creativity. I come from the graphic trade, I was educated as a lithographer - it does not even exist anymore! (chuckles) So for me I was really happy about getting the LEGO job, but a little disappointed because of where I came from because of what I thought of it being more creative, but it wasn’t. Jens: Well again, it was totally something different. TBB: What was your educational background? But at that time I was really into comics and making my own drawings on Star Wars, so I had interest, so it was with other thing but not together with LEGO. But I can’t remember making my own Star Wars models, even though it was a big interest. And then I spent a lot of time making my own creations. ![]() At that time, as far back as I can remember, I was building houses and stuff like that, and then I remember I had some of the first lego trains sets as well and I still have pictures of myself playing with them. Jens: I’m Danish, and as you know, in Denmark every kid plays with LEGO, right? Same thing for me. TBB: Did you grow up playing with LEGO as well? Did you build your own Star Wars models before you joined LEGO? And then before I started on that, I saw a job application for a permanent position as model builder and I got the job. At that event in Copenhagen, there were some LEGO people there, and they were looking to hire designers not for model builders but for making new prototypes for new elements, and well I was of course interested in that. ![]() I have a hobby building plastic model kits, which mainly is of World War II stuff. In 1998 I was participating in a model building exhibition. I really, really loved LEGO but I was never thinking of it as a profession or a career to be honest. LEGO has been a great part of my life for as long as I remember. Jens Kronveld Frederiksen: A little bit of a weird story and coincidence. The Brothers Brick: Just about every LEGO builder’s dream is to become a set designer. Read through to the end to learn a really cool detail about the movie Millennium Falcon Jens saw during a visit to Pinewood Studios during the filming of The Force Awakens! Jens has been with LEGO for more than 20 years, and shares his insights on how he joined the company, what lessons he’s learned over the years, and how LEGO balances input from both kids and adults. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of LEGO Star Wars, I recently sat down with Jens Kronveld Frederiksen, the Director of Design for the LEGO Star Wars line. ![]() ![]() ![]() This technique helps Conrad indirectly reveal different messages, meanings, and imagery indirectly. Conrad’s use and execution of this is what hooks the reader, and keeps their attention to continue reading. These symbolizations are shown through both characters and key elements in the novel. Throughout his experience, the novella is emphasized with imagery to reveal various symbolizations. The symbolism seems to be a consistent key role in the development of his story theme. This can be found at the beginning of the novella where the book reads, “The sea-reach of the Thames stretched before us like the beginning of an interminable waterway.” (p.132) Marlow’s narrative later takes place in Congo after his opportunity of becoming a steamboat captain. It is then ironic that Conrad would be among the first to expose this truth, all the while advocating the elusiveness of truth itself. The novella is set to be on the Thames in London. His truth turns out an ugly, shameful one that had been denied by Western society. In Heart of Darkness, Marlow is haunted by the notion of Kurtz, a man who stands as a symbol for the true cruelty of European colonialism. In other words, focusing on abstract concepts and symbols instead of clear depictions of the concrete, modern writers perceive truth as intangible, like a phantom that haunts our consciousness but never fully penetrates it. Do you see him? Do you see the story? Do you see anything? it is impossible to convey the life-sensation of any given epoch of one’s existence–that which makes its truth, its meaning–its subtle and penetrating essence. I did not see the man in the name any more than you do. According to modern writers, this elusiveness or intangibility characterizes truth in general, which is impossible to express through mere words: “He was just a word for me. It’s worth noting that Marlow journeys several months before finding Kurtz or rather the truth of him. ![]() ‘My Intended, my ivory, my station, my river, my…’ everything belonged to him.” Kurtz symbolizes the true nature of European colonialism in all its depravity. He is blatantly greedy: “You should have heard him say, ‘My ivory.’ Oh yes, I heard him. He comes to Africa “equipped with moral ideas of some sort”, but, once there, he lacks “restraint in the gratification of his various lusts”. Kurtz is the living embodiment of Europe: “his mother was half-English, his father was half-French” and his name is a German word. This initiated wraith from the back of Nowhere honoured me with its amazing confidence before it vanished altogether.” He still refers to him as a shade and as a wraith: “I am trying to account to myself the shade of Mr. He is intangible: “I didn’t say to myself, ‘Now I will never see him,’ or ‘Now I will never shake him by the hand,’ but, ‘Now I will never hear him.’ The man presented himself as a voice.” This doesn’t change once Marlow meets Kurtz. ![]() Kurtz.”Īt this point, Kurtz is not a person to Marlow but rather an elusive presence. Meeting him becomes his only ambition: “I had traveled all this way for the sole purpose of talking with Mr. It was just two months from the day we left the creek when we came to the bank below Kurtz’s station.” Marlow is obsessed with the notion of Kurtz. When I say very soon I mean it comparatively. The narrator’s eagerness constantly leads the readers to believe they’re about to meet him: “I was then rather excited at the prospect of meeting Kurtz very soon. Though we’re only introduced to him in the third and final section of the novel, Kurtz remains an important presence throughout Heart of Darkness, which tells of an ivory transporter travelling down the Congo River in search of a notorious procurement agent. Because words are merely symbols for what they designate and because they can be interpreted in a number of ways, modern writers view objective truth as unattainable and impossible to directly convey, sort of like Kurtz in Heart of Darkness. Modernists like Joseph Conrad favour a subjective recreation of existence in all its inordinate and confusing complexity. For example, a review attempting to explain in an explicit manner the inevitable ambiguity of words could be qualified as ironic. The 1997 edition of the Nelson Canadian Dictionary defines irony as an “incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs”. ![]() ![]() ![]() One Year Prepaid Creative Cloud Introductory Pricing Eligible students 13 and older and teachers can purchase an annual membership to Adobe® Creative Cloud™ for a reduced price of /yr for the first year.
